LOCAL CHEETAH BEATS WORLD RECORD

Onlookers at last nights's third annual cheetah challenge and fun run at Riverclub in Observatory, held their collective breath then cheered loudly as local Spier cheetah Nyana Spier beat the world speed record over a set distance, recorded in California in 2000 with a time of 6,34 seconds.

"The whole idea behind today's 10km cheetah challenge and 5 km fun run was to create an exciting focal point for the broadcasting of a bigger environmental protection message, " said Councillor Brian Watkyns, Exco committee member for Planning and Environment.

"This new record by the Spier cheetah should be seen as an inspiration for us all in the fight to save endangered species and protect our environmental heritage for future generations"
