COUNCIL APPROVES URGENT WORK TO PROTECT CITY POWER SUPPLY
The
City of Cape Town has approved urgent work to be carried out on shunt reactors
in Montague Gardens that are vital to protect the supply of electrical power to
the CBD and Atlantic suburbs.
Councillor
David Erleigh, the Executive Committee Member responsible for City
Infrastructure, said refurbishment was approved to prevent what a report to the
Council described as a “potentially catastrophic event”.
“During
the refurbishing process it was found that parts of the reactors that were to be
re-used in terms of the tender also needed replacing,” he said. “The
additional tender of R167 000 could not wait for the full Council approval
process and was approved by the Executive Committee instead.”
Rotek Engineering has been awarded the contract, which has a total value of R5,95 million.
