A Kaleidoscope of advertising and e-marketing skills, is how direct marketing expert Colleen Backstrom defines her company. Established in 1981, Kaleidoscope covers the full advertising and marketing spectrum in classic advertising, from strategic business thinking through to the finished product.

The company recently celebrated the success of their exciting range of e-marketing tools, which are designed to turn an e-mail marketing campaign into a powerhouse marketing statement instead of just another e-mail, at the Cape Cadogan Hotel.

And what about spam?

Spam, the email equivalent of junk mail, is one of clients’ first concerns when implementing an eMarketing campaign. According to the Electronic Communications Act of 2002, there are legal implications only if emailers do not provide a functioning unsubscribe link or if they refuse to tell the recipient where the address was obtained.

Cost effective eMarketing

eBrochures, a new form of marketing, are a product unique to Kaleidoscope, who hold the intellectual property rights as well as copyright. It is a cost effective, small (under 300kbs for up to 17 pictures) and powerful way to send a moving picture by e-mail.

ePostcards are used for cost effective, consistent communication to a database of clients and, instead of sending out blank text messages, you have a visual look and feel of your products and business with eStationery. Other marketing tools that have been added to the range include eForms, eNewsletters, eInvitations and eCards, all providing a cost effective and visually pleasing method of getting your message across to your target audience. Kaleidoscope also offers a free support line to clients, who qualify for free advice and support on any aspect of marketing. The website, www.kscope.co.za offers regular marketing tips and secrets to visitors consisting of 13 do-it-yourself lessons. A worthwhile resource to visit.

“We are proud to offer our clients a full range of marketing tools, specifically focused on the business and strategic thinking preliminary to the creative and design concept”, says Backstrom. “We offer a holistic solution that is essential in the production of communication that works.”

Having received the President’s Award from the Institut e of Marketing for outstanding marketing contribution, Backstrom boasts a number of accolades, such as being the first woman to Chair the Institute of Marketing Management, being published in the Direct Marketing International UK and being a guest lecturer on brochure and mail order topics for UCT and the University of Stellenbosch, among others. For Backstrom, her UK experience in direct marketing has established a passion for the psychology and the design and copy behind the interactive process of direct marketing.

It seems that Kaleidoscope keeps moving from strength to strength. With search engine optimisation being the key word, Backstrom offers the challenge that provided specific guidelines are followed and a website hosting provider ensures a reliable service, Kaleidoscope guarantees that if your site is not ranked within the top 10 for specified keyword phrases within six months, Kaleidoscope will continue to promote the site for another three months at no charge, or until it does achieve the desired ranking.

Says client service manager, Joanne Craib, “Our website marketing is based on an ethical approach. We neither use nor link to sites that use methods which may be regarded by search engines as spam. Web statistics show that only the top three pages of a web search with 30 results ever generate serious traffic. Therefore a top position in a search engine is paramount and will result in higher numbers of qualified visitors to your site.”

Does it work?

Substantial e-commerce took place as a result of an increase in the number of visits to the www.decordirect.co.za hub website marketed and owned by Kaleidoscope. The website was launched in April 2004 by sending out 5000 e-Postcards. 3 272 page visits were received in April and in September 16 171 visits were received.  The proof is obviously in the pudding!
