WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN WINNING WOMEN AWARD COMPETITION

The three finalists chosen to receive top prizes in the inaugural Winning Women Awards have been handed their awards by the Minister for Constitutional Affairs and Technology, Dr Audrey Van Zyl, at a prestigious ceremony held at Artscape on National Women’s Day, Thursday 9 August 2001.

The three finalists were among the 45 entries received from women across the rural and metropolitan areas of the Western Cape who have taken the lead – often at significant personal sacrifice.

The final three are ‘Mama’ Maureen Lumka who was nominated for her selfless role in building up and running of the now substantial Nceduluntu Educare Centre for disabled and abused children in Nomzamo, Strand; Pat van Rensburg for her dedicated work in rescuing abandoned, often HIV/Aids positive babies; and Helen Lieberman for her tireless work in creating and running the Ikamva Labantu organisation providing widespread programmes for especially disabled, blind, children and the elderly in impoverished communities.
