CITY OF CAPE TOWN
INTRODUCES MOTOR BIKE SQUAD IN SOUTHERN SUBURBS
page one
The
City of Cape Town has announced the introduction of eight motor cycles to
complement the existing squad of safety and security officers.
According
to the City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, Councillor
David Erleigh, this is to police the areas around Newlands Forest and Rhodes
Memorial and is similar to the initiative on Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, which
aims to combat crime by visible policing. There will also be a focus on
ensuring the safety of tourists.
He
added, "A recent crime analysis as well as credible intelligence indicate
that housebreakings and hijackings are on the increase in area. As these crimes
are committed with firearms, the City Police Service will deploy motorcycle
patrols to provide a further deterrent in these areas.
"The
Cape Town City Police is dedicated to delivering police services in partnership
with our communities to create a safe environment for the optimal functioning
of all stakeholders in the city through the provision of effective community
policing, traffic policing, bylaw enforcement and crime prevention services.
“We
will combat hijackings and other related bylaw and traffic contraventions by
means of motorcycle, motor vehicle and foot patrols, impact focused patrols,
particularly in hot spots, the identification of suspects and taking a zero
tolerance approach.”
The
officers on motor cycles, who will be operational in the near future, will
provide rapid response to reported incidents involving hijackings,
housebreakings, robberies, assault, ATM fraud, traffic contravention, traffic
control and by-law enforcement.
The
public are encouraged to support the officers by reporting crimes to (021) 596 1400.
