CITY HOSTS HANOVER PARK CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT FOR THE YOUTH

                                                                                                            page one

The City of Cape Town will be hosting a capacity building workshop for 30  grade 8 to grade 11 learners from various schools in Hanover Park.  The five-day camp will be from 12-15 May 2005 at the Voortrekker Park Resort in the Strand.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, Councillor David Erleigh, the workshop aims to make the youth aware of the impact of negative behaviour on the community and, ultimately, their own lives. Participants will be encouraged to explore and start to create an ideal living environment.

The workshop further aims through programmes to raise awareness of issues, such as drug abuse, domestic violence and dealing with diversity.

Over the years, Hanover Park has become known for its violence and crime that has held the community hostage for decades. Participation in these evil acts involves learners who are as young as twelve years old and who are being used to commit crimes, which vary from stealing and robbing to assault and even murder.

Obviously, this long term exposure and involvement in crime and violence has profound effects on the values of society to the extent that it is often viewed as normal and even accepted as a way of life for communities, particularly those in Hanover Park.

Most schools can’t cope with the situation and the criminal activity at schools is making matters worse.

However, the Hanover Park Chrysalis Community Club wants to make a difference in their community and reinstate morals and values in the youth through this capacity building workshop.
